CimsISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, is pleased to announce that the proposed criteria for the green building dimension of its popular Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) and Certification Program, CIMS-GB, is now available for public review and comment. The review period commences today and continues through September 4, 2009. Individuals interested in reviewing the draft criteria are encouraged to visit http://www.issa.com/cims-gb and may submit applicable feedback to cimsgb@issa.com.

ISSA assembled a nine-member technical committee, which includes representatives of all industry segments, to develop the draft CIMS-GB criteria that will form the basis for a new GB designation. The new designation is intended to meet the growing demand for green certification and the criteria is expected to be largely based on the specific green cleaning requirements of the LEED for Existing Buildings:  Operations & Maintenance Green Building Rating System (LEED-EB: O&M). As such, the CIMS-GB designation will offer cleaning organizations an optional certification that is closely tailored to provide their customers with precisely what they need to secure LEED-EB: O&M points, while greening their operations overall.

"The ultimate goal of the CIMS Green Building criteria and designation will be to allow organizations to verify their ability to assist customers in meeting the LEED-EBOM green cleaning requirements, but we also have a unique opportunity to raise the bar beyond LEED as far as environmental preferability and cleaning is concerned," said Dan Wagner, ISSA Director of Facility Service Programs.  "The committee has started the work of doing so and we are eager to receive feedback from the industry at large as to how we can develop a practical industry standard that takes green cleaning to the next level while answering the specific market demand created by LEED."

Upon completion of the public review period, the committee will meet to review all public feedback and complete the final round of edits to the criteria. ISSA expects to officially publish the CIMS-GB final criteria at ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America 2009, in Chicago, IL, October 6-9. Organizations will be able to certify to the CIMS-GB designation following publication.

About CIMS

CIMS applies to management, operations, performance systems, and processes. Compliance with the Standard demonstrates that an organization is structured to deliver consistent, quality services designed to meet the customer's needs and expectations. It sets forth processes, procedures, and supporting documentation proven to be characteristic of customer-driven organizations. Given that CIMS is nonprescriptive, each organization has the flexibility to choose the most effective ways in which to meet its requirements.

The Standard was created through a true consensus-based process that brought together representatives of the cleaning, facilities-management, and purchasing communities. In total, more than 100,000 constituents were represented in the process, which included a full peer review and was administered by ISSA and the American Institute for Cleaning Sciences.
