Susan MoralesThe ARCSI 2009 Awards Committee has named Susan Morales of Custom Maid in Virginia Beach, VA, the recipient of the first Perry D. Phillips Jr Award which honors professional excellence in the residential cleaning industry.  Formerly the Professional Cleaner of the Year, the award was renamed in 2009 in honor of the ARCSI founder. Susan is a true professional.  Here are some comments from the nomination letter that was submitted on her behalf.

This is the Entry Submitted by Custom Maid about Susan

About 6 or 7 years ago I was hiring new employees, a task I do all the time!  I was in dire need so made a decision that was a little iffy.  As I interviewed this woman, I was totally impressed.  She was well groomed,  attractive, in full make up, well spoken and a college graduate not to mention "of a certain age".  I always try to picture how a person like that will cope with the daily realities of cleaning toilets.  When she showed up to clean on the first day with perfect hair and make up I was really second guessing my decision but my business at that point was in an "any warm body" mode.  When she returned to the office at the end of that first day, she was smiling (always a good sign) and still looked perfect!  Over the years, I have never been able to figure out how someone can clean four houses a day and still look like she's ready for an evening out.

She is always smiling.  One year when we were giving out our annual awards we made one up especially for her called the Sunshine Award because she is always happy and perky and willing to help anyone with anything.

Then she got cancer.  She was going to go through a few courses of chemo therapy.  She scheduled her chemo appointments for late Friday afternoons so she wouldn't have to miss work that day.  Then she'd go home and be sick all weekend long and show up almost every Monday morning with that smile still firmly on her face. During this time she also worked part time at Linens 'n' Things.

Chemo went on for almost a year, but finally ended.  She remained on the job and seldom asked for a lighter schedule or any concessions to her illness.

A little over a year ago, it became apparent to me why I had hired her in the first place.  An important position opened up in our busy office.  The opening was unexpected and the person leaving gave no notice.  I knew right away that I already had just the right person for the job.  Within 3 weeks of taking over the job, she was handling all manner of phone calls, had mastered Service CEO, and was doing in home estimates on her own and had a closing ratio at least as good as my more experienced staff.

She may have been way overqualified for her first position, but now she's in the right seat on the bus and doing a bang up job.  Her demeanor and loyalty define the word professional.
