Perry D. Phillips, Jr. is a writer, speaker, and consultant for the professional home cleaning industry. Perry is the Publisher of Home Cleaner Magazine, the only publication exclusively for owners and managers of home cleaning service companies. He is also the Founder of ARCSI, the only non-profit member based association for the industry.

Perry started his first residential cleaning company at the age of 19 in Meridian, MS. He is an advocate for the industry with a passion for educating services owners and consumers about the professional house cleaning industry.

Perhaps your personal motivation for being in business for yourself is financial reward; the ability to create unlimited income for yourself and your family. Some service owners are motivated by quality of life issues; being your own boss allows you to set your hours and work days. Many find fulfillment and satisfaction by providing jobs for employees and the sheer challenge that starting and growing your own company involves.

Are you willing to jump right in and do what you dread the most? Do you wait, delay, and put it off to another day, all along staying busier than anyone you know, and everyone always ask, “How do you get so much done”? You know what I am talking about; procrastinating, not doing what REALLY needs to be done. Maybe you sit and stare at the wall. Perhaps you bury yourself in paperwork, masking behind “I got all this stuff to do”, when you are not doing what you should actually be spending MOST your time doing.Are you willing to jump right in and do what you dread the most? Do you wait, delay, and put it off to another day, all along staying busier than anyone you know, and everyone always ask, “How do you get so much done”?

If You blink don't worryRecently, I was accused of “throwing too much information out too quickly” . In a conversation with a service owner, frustration was expressed to me that she felt she did not have time to run her cleaning business and keep up with the activity on Home Cleaner Magazine. She said, “Gosh Perry, if I blink I feel like I have missed something, I paid my money I want to be able to see it all.”

  Easy to Get Into, Hard to Stay In

That about sums up the professional home cleaning industry wouldn't you say?

Anyone with a good set of equipment, a business license, and general liability insurance can start a home cleaning company. Go to the business section of any bookstore and in the start-up book section you will find book after book, with authors and so called "experts" writing about how easy it is to start a maid service.

Home-based cleaning services can be found in just about every book that has a title along the lines of "Top 100 Home Based Businesses", or "Easy Businesses to Start for Under $100", while the latter title is quite a stretch even in the most ideal situations, it is true, you can have a legitimate, legal home cleaning company for a very small amount of capital, combined with the willingness to invest a great deal of "sweat equity".

What most, or really of all these books fail to tell you is the rest of the story.

This time of the year the phone will ring constantly with old and new customers wanting to schedule spring cleanings for their homes. It has become synonymous with spring- it is just natural for people to think about "spring cleaning".

A time to really dig in, clean out the garage, closets, and the back of cabinets.

Out with all of the old- taking time to clean and shine, especially the areas that don't always get cleaned regularly.

What have you done as far as spring cleaning for your business? Is it time to reach WAY into the back, take a look at what can be discarded, cleaned or shined up?

As we move more into spring and notice everything coming to life as it does each time this year, we see plants and trees budding; flowers bursting with life and color as a reminder of the renewal of life in nature. It is part of the natural cycle of life; the long cold winter always comes and clears way for a beautiful spring and new life to appear.

Just as this cycle takes place in nature, our businesses have their own cycle, a winter and a spring. It is human nature, perhaps instinctively ingrained in us to join in on the explosion of new life and beauty around us.
